Digital DAS in a live airport terminal

A fully digital, fiber-optic DAS installed in the terminal of "George Enescu" International Airport Bacău - multiband coverage from a single rack, with compact radio units integrated into the terminal ceiling.

About the project

“George Enescu” International Airport Bacău operates a modern Schengen terminal, with a continuous flow of passengers. For one of the leading mobile network operators, Claritech designed and installed a new-generation indoor coverage system in the terminal: a fully digital DAS, in which the radio signal travels over optical fiber all the way to compact radio units with integrated antennas, mounted discreetly in the ceiling.

Project requirements

In an airport terminal, a classic passive DAS has practical limits: long runs of rigid coaxial cable, visible antennas and works that are hard to execute in a facility with strict security requirements and a non-stop schedule. The terminal’s architecture required a solution that passengers would not notice, and the works had to be coordinated with the airport’s daily operation.

Project type

Design and installation of a digital DAS in an airport terminal in operation.

Location

“George Enescu” International Airport Bacău - passenger terminal.

Technologies

Multiband 2G/4G - 900, 1800 and 2600 MHz - from a single head-end, with GPS synchronization.

The solution - multiband radio units

The solution consists of installing multiband radio units with integrated antennas, mounted on the ceiling - 2.3 kg and 23 × 23 cm each - powered through a single hybrid fiber-power cable and connected to a central rack. The signal stays digital, with no rigid coaxial cable and no splitters or tappers along the routes.

8 radio units with integrated antennas

Distributed across the terminal’s zones, integrated into the architectural ceiling - with no visual impact.

~570 m of hybrid cabling

Optical fiber and power in a single cable, with runs from 10 to 110 m - fast installation, with minimal impact on the terminal.

A single rack, four bands

A compact 42U head-end: the baseband units serve the 900/1800/2600 MHz bands for 2G and 4G, with time synchronization via a GPS antenna mounted on the roof.

Installation in a live terminal

Work at height on mobile platforms, outside peak hours, coordinated with the airport’s operations and security.

GPS synchronization antenna on the terminal roof, with the control tower and the runway in the background

GPS synchronization: the antenna on the terminal roof, with the control tower in the background.

Mobile elevated work platform in the terminal hall during the system installation

Installation in the terminal in operation - works planned outside peak hours.

The results

Multiband coverage. Signal in all areas of the terminal, with the radio units integrated into the architectural ceiling.

A fully digital system. No coaxial losses: the signal is carried over fiber to the radio units, and the system can be extended by simply adding new units.

Installed without disrupting operations. The works were executed in the operational terminal, coordinated with the flight schedule and with the security requirements.

Ready for extension. The digital architecture allows new zones and new bands to be added from the same head-end.

Why Claritech

From passive DAS to fully digital systems: we have been designing in iBwave since 2012, with our own RF lab and over 40,000 antennas installed in stadiums, airports, hospitals and office buildings. See the DAS project portfolio →
