Radio links between oil platforms in the Black Sea

Replacing a failed radio link with a Cambium PTP 670 bridge and bringing the links between oil platforms in the Black Sea to full capacity - work planned in detail and carried out at height, above the open sea.

About the project

For an operator in the offshore energy sector, Claritech intervened to maintain the network of point-to-point radio links that connect the platforms to each other - the infrastructure that carries operational data and critical communications, tens of kilometers from shore. After an assessment and remediation visit in September 2024, we returned in early 2025 for a planned intervention: the complete replacement of a failed link with new-generation Cambium Networks equipment and bringing the existing links up to full specification.

Project requirements

On an offshore platform there is no way to procure missing equipment or materials later: anything missing means a new mobilization. Every intervention is planned in detail: the equipment, tools, consumables and spare parts must reach the platform together with the team.

The work window depends on the weather and the platform’s operational schedule. The work is carried out at height, above the open sea, in a saline atmosphere corrosive to equipment, under the strict safety rules of the oil and gas industry. The radio links are the only data connection between the platforms.

Project type

Replacement and optimization of point-to-point radio links, in the 5 GHz band, between offshore oil platforms.

Working environment

Work at height above the open sea, saline atmosphere, access and work windows dependent on the weather.

Timeframe

Assessment and remediation visit in September 2024; the execution work, in early 2025.

The solution

We removed the failed link and installed a Cambium PTP 670 wireless bridge between the two platforms, in a master-slave architecture, calibrated and aligned to the design parameters.

Realignment to full capacity

Another link was running below capacity: at the previous visit, temporarily erected scaffolding was blocking the signal path. We realigned the antennas, and the link now runs at full capacity.

On one of the platforms we optimized the connection of a third Cambium link by installing a new Andrew CNT-400 coaxial jumper.

Validation and handover

Every link was verified at the end: checks and statistics on both master and slave, ping tests between platforms - all documented in an installation report handed over to the beneficiary.

What we delivered

ComponentDetails
LocationOffshore oil platforms, Black Sea
LinksMultiple point-to-point radio links verified and brought up to specification
Fully replaced1 link: Cambium PTP 670 bridge (master-slave), replacing failed equipment
Other workRealignment of an existing link to full capacity; new CNT-400 coaxial jumper
ValidationCapacity statistics on master and slave, ping tests between platforms
DocumentationInstallation report with the parameters of every link, handed to the beneficiary

The results

A new, stable link between platforms. The failed link was fully replaced with a Cambium PTP 670 bridge aligned to the design parameters.

Full capacity on the existing links. The link that was running below capacity because of a temporary obstruction was realigned and confirmed through measurements.

One intervention covering the entire radio network. The planning done at the assessment visit brought all the necessary equipment and materials onto the platform together with the team.

Complete documentation. The beneficiary received the installation report with the status, statistics and tests for every link.
