About the project
As part of the “Cetățeni pentru aer curat în școala ta” (“Citizens for clean air in your school”) program - launched by the Ecopolis association with the support of Storia - five schools in Bucharest received their own air-quality monitoring system. Claritech was the project’s technical partner: we designed, built, installed and operate the entire system, from the measurement station mounted on the facade to the screen in the school hallway. The systems went live in April 2026.
Project requirements
The program’s objective: for pupils, teachers and parents to see, every day, what air they breathe around their school. This required: a real-time display in the school hallway that runs on its own - installed quickly and managed remotely across all five locations.
Project type
A complete air-quality monitoring and display system, delivered turnkey: sensors, connectivity, kiosks and centralized management.
Location
5 schools in Bucharest - an outdoor sensor mounted on the facade and a display screen in the hallway of each school.
Measured parameters
Particulate matter (PM1, PM2.5, PM4, PM10), VOC index (volatile organic compounds) and NOx (nitrogen oxides), temperature, humidity and ambient noise - every 15 minutes.
The solution
Outdoor station, on the school facade
A compact station with a Sensirion SEN55 sensor - PM1/PM2.5/PM4/PM10 particulate matter, VOC and NOx index, temperature and humidity - plus a dedicated module for measuring ambient noise. Mounted on the facade, it measures the environmental conditions at the school entrance.
Real-time display in the school hallway
A kiosk with a 32” screen, mounted in the hallway, shows the readings in real time: color-coded dials on the air-quality scale (CAQI), trend charts for the last 7 days and a detailed view of the last 24 hours - readable from a distance.
4G connectivity
Each kiosk has its own 4G router: the station sends its data to the central platform and the kiosk displays it - with no connection to the school’s IT network required.
Self-running operation
The kiosk runs unattended: a watchdog checks system health every 2 minutes, and the data is stored locally (the display keeps working even without a server connection). To save energy, the screen switches off automatically when the school is closed.

The station’s electronics, designed by Claritech: the environmental sensor’s main board, with power, a backup system and sensor interfaces.

The sensor on the facade: particulate matter, gases, microclimate and noise, measured every 15 minutes.
What we delivered
| Component | Details |
|---|---|
| Schools equipped | 5 schools in Bucharest |
| Sensor | Outdoor station with a Sensirion sensor plus an ambient-noise measurement module |
| Parameters | PM1 / PM2.5 / PM4 / PM10, VOC index, NOx index, temperature, humidity, noise |
| Display | Kiosk with a 32” screen in each school’s hallway, Romanian-language interface |
| Connectivity | 4G LTE CAT1 router, fully separate from the school’s IT network |
| Operations | Centralized management: remote monitoring and updates for the whole fleet |
Five schools, managed as one
Once installed, the systems run on their own. All five kiosks continuously report their technical health to our central platform: processor temperature, display status, presence of sensor data. Software updates are rolled out remotely, to all locations, with a single command.

The in-school screen: particulates, CAQI index, VOC, NOx and noise - the measured values, displayed in real time.
The results
The hallway display. Air quality presented on a real-time screen, in a hallway that hundreds of pupils walk past daily.
A teaching tool. The color scale and the trend charts can support lessons about traffic, heating, the seasons and the city’s air.
Self-running operation. The systems have been running unattended since April 2026, with remote monitoring and updates.
A replicable model. The same configuration - a Claritech PM station with an LTE CAT1 modem, a kiosk, centralized management - can be installed in any school, town hall or institution, in a few hours per location.
The program was publicly presented by Storia and Ecopolis.
Why Claritech
We have been monitoring the air in schools since 2021, as the technology partner of the City Air program, the national network for monitoring air quality in schools. We build both the measurement stations and the platforms that collect, display and manage the data - from the Claritech PM station with its Sensirion sensor to public displays and fleet management.
